About Tutoring Advantage
Tutoring Advantage was founded by Joan Robertson in 2006. Joan is a licensed teacher, trained in the Orton-Gillingham method and specializes in Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and learning disabilities.
Joan attended Bemidji State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a math emphasis in November 1992. In May of 1992 she completed her kindergarten student teaching and kindergarten intercultural course work at Vaxjo University in Sweden. She later went on to complete course work in all four levels of the Orton-Gillingham Method through the Upper Midwest Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota and Hamline University.
Joan started her teaching career as an enrichment and remedial kindergarten reading teacher in Bloomington, Minnesota. She worked for 5 years as a special education kindergarten teacher at Groves Academy in St. Louis Park Minnesota. She continued her passion to help students in the Hopkins & Robinsdale School Districts as a reading and math tutor. Before beginning in private practice she worked as an academic therapist with the Integrative Medicine Clinic at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis and Park Nicollet Alexander Center in Eden Prairie.
While working with students with learning disabilities, Joan's passion for teaching reading and spelling blossomed. Joan started researching dyslexia and science-based programs because she wasn't seeing the progress she expected from struggling readers.
Joan began her private practice in 2006. She is eager to work with students who have learning needs, especially dyslexia.
Joan lives with her family and tutors out of her home office located in Bloomington, MN.
Joan finds it a privilege to help students with special educational needs and she wants to work with families dedicated to providing the very best instruction for their children.
